a photographer's life: Annie Leibovitz

I just got back from the Annie Leibovitz exhibition currently being shown at Sydney's MCA gallery and all I can say is wow. I was once again reminded of what a talented and prolific photographer Annie is. A mix of portraits, personal photos, landscapes and photo journalism, the exhibit as a whole is beautiful and moving. There are many sad, quiet personal photographs of Annie's lover Susan Sontag in the early days and later throughout her various illnesses scattered amongst commanding sweeping landscapes. Portraits of influential and celebrated figures in sports, politics, film and music are mixed with confronting images of Rwandan killings and mayhem in Sarajevo. I was thrilled to see one of my all time favourite photographs, that of a young and in love Kate Moss and Johnny Depp shot by Leibovitz for Vanity Fair in the 90s. Another favourite, of Patti Smith and her children photographed at home, is almost overshadowed by it's placement next to the commanding and almost surreal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The exhibit is running until April, so if you can, get in quick and have a look. You won't regret it.
